Event Description

Part of the Desert Defenders initiative, join Friends of the Tonto as they work with Tonto National Forest and neighboring communities to identify, map and remove non-native plants.

In this training session you’ll learn how to use the free Esri Field Maps application to collect data on non-native plants. After a short orientation and safety review, you will hike into a major wash where you will observe and map fountain grass and buffelgrass. Help us protect our natural areas from this wildfire risk! Contact Don at Friends of the Tonto for more information.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about butterflies? Here’s your chance! The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a butterfly training program to help determine population trends, species richness, and diversity within the county. Attend the training program and learn:

  • beginner butterfly identification,
  • receive a brief introduction to helpful butterfly apps,

Then, put your skills to the test at one of the upcoming butterfly monitoring program events at the parks! Masks required.

Event Description

Bring the family for a wild night at Estrella Mountain Regional Park! On this 1-2 mile guided hike we may find blooming saguaros, hear owls and coyotes, or spot a scorpion under a blacklight. These family centered night hikes will be an adventure for all ages.

Trail will be determined the week of the hike and is based on trail conditions. Meet at the Nature Center for directions.

Event Description

Join the Desert Defenders partner, Friends of the Tonto and volunteers to remove fountain grass at Lost Dutchman State Park. They will be meeting at 7:00 a.m. at the entrance to Lost Dutchman State Park for free entrance passes. Come prepared with gloves, hat, a backpack and plenty of water!

They will park at the Siphon Draw Trail Head and hike approx. 1.5 miles to an area of fountain grass to conduct the removals.

Event Description

Have you joined Maricopa County Parks EcoBlitz Program yet? It is a great opportunity to learn more about desert wildlife and plants, while contributing to science! The month of April is the Master Blister Beetle challenge.

These colorful beetles can grow to be a few inches long with a mix of deep black and bright red/orange. Often found in Brittlebush, these native Sonoran Desert beetles feed on petals and pollen. Caution: Do not touch them as they secrete a special liquid that can cause blisters. How many can you find?

We encourage you to photograph all or any species you come across while in the parks. It’s easy! Learn more on how to upload photos and identify to species visit Maricopa County Parks webpage.

This initiative is co-sponsored by SciStarter, the ASU School for the Future of Innovation in Society and the Conservation Innovation Lab.

Throughout April, which is also Earth Month and Citizen Science Month, the Arizona StateUniversity (ASU) community and the entire state of Arizona is invited to participate in a citizen science project to help document flowering plants and pollinators on ASU’s Phoenix-area campuses. Pollinators are vital to healthy ecosystems and the global economy. We simply could not live without them!
