SUMMARY:DBG Visiting Researcher Guest Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve Seed Ball Workshop\n \n Distinguishing Leaf Scorching from Leaf Discoloration Due to Heatwaves & Drought\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Description\nSummary\nRising global temperatures are increasing the frequency of extreme heat and drought events\, often producing widespread and abrupt leaf discoloration in forests. Such discoloration is commonly interpreted as premature or stress-induced senescence\, yet during hot droughts it may instead reflect leaf scorching. Although visually similar\, senescence and scorching arise from fundamentally different physiological processes\, with contrasting implications for nutrient resorption\, carbon cycling\, and ecosystem functioning. By exposing two species with distinct response to extreme heat (> 50°C)\, we aim to uncover the key physiological processes leading to premature leaf senescence and leaf scorching under extreme thermal stress\, shedding light to the thermal and hydraulic thresholds of the aforementioned processes. \nAbout the Speaker\nMaxwell Bergström is visiting from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in Lausanne\, Switzerland. He is collaborating with research staff and students in the DBG Dryland Plant Ecophysiology Lab\, studying the effects of heat and drought on Fremont cottonwood and Gooding’s willow from a plant hydraulics and thermal limits perspective. \nModality\nThis presentation will be in person at Desert Botanical Garden’s Dorrance Hall or via Zoom \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nAug 27\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden - Dorrance Hall \n 1201 N Galvin Pkwy\, Phoenix\, AZ 85008\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nZoom Hyperlink\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Registration\nRegistration is not necessary\, but if you are attending in person please visit the Desert Botanical Garden site to purchase an admission ticket.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Garden Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Partners\nCAZCA functions through extensive partnerships to stand together and further our conservation efforts. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Other Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Chiricahua National Monument & the Path to Arizona’s Fourth National Park\n \n Oct 22\, 2026 \n \n \n Join HECHO for a conversation about the case for making Chiricahua our next national park. The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course is an immersive\, hands-on experience designed for trip leaders\, camp staff\, outdoor adventurers\, and anyone who spends time in remote environments. \nThrough dynamic instruction\, practical demonstrations\, and realistic rescue scenarios\, you’ll learn how to assess and care for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Working with mock patients and challenging situations\, you’ll put your skills to the test and gain experience making critical decisions under pressure. \nBy the end of the course\, you’ll have the knowledge\, practical skills\, and confidence to respond effectively when it matters most — helping you keep yourself and others safe in the outdoors. \nThis course may also be used to recertify NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and NOLS Wilderness Medicine WEMT (wilderness portion only) certifications.  The NOLS Wilderness First Aid course meets the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid requirement. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nAug 1-2\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n accessibility\nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program. SUMMARY:Community Science Monitoring of Urban Saguaro Health: The Saguaro Monitoring Program within the Desert Botanical Garden’s Saguaro Initiatives

However\, long-term monitoring is essential to strengthen these data and better understand changes in plant health and survival over time. To address this need\, the Saguaro Monitoring Program was developed as a student- and volunteer-led initiative in which community members are assigned a plot of approximately 20 saguaros that they visit regularly to document plant health and condition. As the project completes its first year of surveys\, results from the initial monitoring effort will be presented\, along with a discussion of the benefits and challenges of using community science to monitor urban plant populations. \nAn entry ticket to the Garden is required for in-person attendance\, see the registration section for more information. \nVirtual attendance is via zoom: https://dbg-org.zoom.us/j/85781899256?pwd=gSC71Ude0s1MYhzVXY5AKkBVhAic48.1 \nThe meeting should automatically login\, but if it doesn’t here is the meeting info: \nMeeting ID: 857 8189 9256\, Passcode: 684957 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nMay 5\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden - Dorrance Hall\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nRegistration is not required\, but one must purchase a ticket to Desert Botanical Garden. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DBG Plan Your Visit Page\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Partners\nCAZCA functions through extensive partnerships to stand together and further our conservation efforts. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Other Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Chiricahua National Monument & the Path to Arizona’s Fourth National Park\n \n Oct 22\, 2026 \n \n \n Join HECHO for a conversation about the case for making Chiricahua our next national park. We have been helping to develop a piece of land adjacent to the village of Punta Chueca\, as a long term plot for research on the climate change impact on columnar cacti\, as well as an ethnobotanical trail to promote plant uses among local youth and visitors. \nAn entry ticket to the Garden is required for entry\, see the registration section for more information. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nMarch 17\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden - Dorrance Hall\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n accessibility\nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program. To this day\, few ecologists have had the opportunity to examine this extremely arid region. Dr. Joe McAuliffe had the unusual opportunity to spend two weeks working in this area in 2022\, and will share some of what he saw and learned during that experience. \nMarch 17: The Hassica An Garden: an ethnobotanical and research site in the Comcaac Land of Sonora\, MexicoDorrance Hall \n\nRaul Puente\, Curator of living Collections & Research Botanist\n\nSince 2015\, Desert Botanical Garden’s researchers have been making trips to the coast of Sonora as part of our columnar cacti studies\, along with collecting seeds and herbarium vouchers\, in land belonging to one of the most enigmatic indigenous groups in the Sonoran Desert region of Mexico: the Comcaac Nation. The Comcaac\, in the past known as the Seri Indians\, are famous for their knowledge and ample use of native plants as food\, medicinal\, construction and handcrafts\, such as baskets and ironwood carvings. We have been helping to develop a piece of land adjacent to the village of Punta Chueca\, as a long term plot for research on the climate change impact on columnar cacti\, as well as an ethnobotanical trail to promote plant uses among local youth and visitors. \nApril 15: Safeguarding Our Desert Icon: Inside the Saguaro Initiatives at Desert Botanical GardenDorrance Hall \n\nTania Hernandez\, New World Succulents Cactus Scientist\n\nThe Saguaro Initiatives are a set of research\, conservation\, and community-science programs led by Desert Botanical Garden to understand\, protect and restore saguaros across the Phoenix Valley and our changing desert. This talk will share what we are learning about saguaro genetics\, health\, survival\, and resilience in the face of rising heat and drought\, and how these efforts connect science\, volunteers\, saguaro owners and long-term conservation. Attendees will also learn how the community can participate in helping safeguard this iconic species for future generations. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nFeb 11\, March 17\, April 15 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n accessibility\nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program. Join us! We will fling native seed pellets created early this year into the desert of Maricopa County’s regional parks. The initiative to spread native seeds is a proactive step towards ecological restoration. These native seeds are selected for their resilience and ability to thrive in the local environment. \nTo learn more about the Parks Desert Defender Program\, visit: https://www.maricopacountyparks.net/about-us/desertdefenders/ \nPlease bring work gloves\, water\, and a snack. Wear a long-sleeved shirt\, pants\, and closed-toed shoes. This activity requires hiking along nature trails. \nWe encourage family participation; however\, parents must be present for minors\, and it is recommended that participants be at least five years of age. Note: If fewer than two people register for each event\, we reserve the right to cancel at least one day before. If canceled\, email notifications will go to the registrants. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nOct. 30\, 2025\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nCave Creek Regional Park Nature Center\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nYes\, please register for the event using our partner’s registration page. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Partners\nCAZCA functions through extensive partnerships to stand together and further our conservation efforts.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Other Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Chiricahua National Monument & the Path to Arizona’s Fourth National Park\n \n Oct 22\, 2026 \n \n \n Join HECHO for a conversation about the case for making Chiricahua our next national park.
