SUMMARY:Community Science Monitoring of Urban Saguaro Health: The Saguaro Monitoring Program within the Desert Botanical Garden’s Saguaro Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:Incorporating Native Plants into your Landscape\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Description\nThe Saguaro Census\, organized by the Desert Botanical Garden\, provides an important snapshot of saguaro distribution across the Phoenix Valley. However\, long-term monitoring is essential to strengthen these data and better understand changes in plant health and survival over time. To address this need\, the Saguaro Monitoring Program was developed as a student- and volunteer-led initiative in which community members are assigned a plot of approximately 20 saguaros that they visit regularly to document plant health and condition. As the project completes its first year of surveys\, results from the initial monitoring effort will be presented\, along with a discussion of the benefits and challenges of using community science to monitor urban plant populations. \nAn entry ticket to the Garden is required for in-person attendance\, see the registration section for more information. \nVirtual attendance is via zoom: https://dbg-org.zoom.us/j/85781899256?pwd=gSC71Ude0s1MYhzVXY5AKkBVhAic48.1 \nThe meeting should automatically login\, but if it doesn’t here is the meeting info: \nMeeting ID: 857 8189 9256\, Passcode: 684957 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nMay 5\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden - Dorrance Hall\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nRegistration is not required\, but one must purchase a ticket to Desert Botanical Garden. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DBG Plan Your Visit Page\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Partners\nCAZCA functions through extensive partnerships to stand together and further our conservation efforts. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Other Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summer Education Series \n \n Webinar \n \n \n \n \n AZ Water Policy Webinar\n \n Jun 10\, 2026 \n \n \n Join us for an insightful webinar on AZ water policy with Sarah Porter. We have been helping to develop a piece of land adjacent to the village of Punta Chueca\, as a long term plot for research on the climate change impact on columnar cacti\, as well as an ethnobotanical trail to promote plant uses among local youth and visitors. \nAn entry ticket to the Garden is required for entry\, see the registration section for more information. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nMarch 17\, 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden - Dorrance Hall\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n accessibility\nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program. To this day\, few ecologists have had the opportunity to examine this extremely arid region. Dr. Joe McAuliffe had the unusual opportunity to spend two weeks working in this area in 2022\, and will share some of what he saw and learned during that experience. \nMarch 17: The Hassica An Garden: an ethnobotanical and research site in the Comcaac Land of Sonora\, MexicoDorrance Hall \n\nRaul Puente\, Curator of living Collections & Research Botanist\n\nSince 2015\, Desert Botanical Garden’s researchers have been making trips to the coast of Sonora as part of our columnar cacti studies\, along with collecting seeds and herbarium vouchers\, in land belonging to one of the most enigmatic indigenous groups in the Sonoran Desert region of Mexico: the Comcaac Nation. The Comcaac\, in the past known as the Seri Indians\, are famous for their knowledge and ample use of native plants as food\, medicinal\, construction and handcrafts\, such as baskets and ironwood carvings. We have been helping to develop a piece of land adjacent to the village of Punta Chueca\, as a long term plot for research on the climate change impact on columnar cacti\, as well as an ethnobotanical trail to promote plant uses among local youth and visitors. \nApril 15: Safeguarding Our Desert Icon: Inside the Saguaro Initiatives at Desert Botanical GardenDorrance Hall \n\nTania Hernandez\, New World Succulents Cactus Scientist\n\nThe Saguaro Initiatives are a set of research\, conservation\, and community-science programs led by Desert Botanical Garden to understand\, protect and restore saguaros across the Phoenix Valley and our changing desert. This talk will share what we are learning about saguaro genetics\, health\, survival\, and resilience in the face of rising heat and drought\, and how these efforts connect science\, volunteers\, saguaro owners and long-term conservation. Attendees will also learn how the community can participate in helping safeguard this iconic species for future generations. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nFeb 11\, March 17\, April 15 2026\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n accessibility\nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program.
