SUMMARY:Speaker Series: What Fuels Wildfires?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Series: White Tanks Connectivity Initiative Series 3\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Description\nMay is all about Wildfire Awareness! Join us for this talk with Dr. Ben Wilder to learn about the role of invasive plants in wildfires and other facets of fire in the Sonoran Desert. \nAlarmingly\, fire is becoming a more frequent occurrence in the desert. Previously\, wet winters associated with infrequent El Niño events would be the sole occurrences when fires could establish in desert lowlands. This situation has changed with invasions of non-native grasses and other plants. In this presentation\, using 2020 Bighorn Fire in the Santa Catalina Mountains outside Tucson as an example\, Dr. Wilder will will discuss these different elements of wildfire\, and also its relationship to people and urban areas. \nDr. Wilder has been director of the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill at the University of Arizona since October 2016. He is also Interim Director of CAZMEX\, the Consortium for Arizona-Mexico Arid Environments. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nMay 26\, 2021\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n5:30 - 7 p.m. MST\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\n\nVirtual\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nYes. How does one go about doing this? Come learn! \nThe mission of the Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) is “…to conserve the natural Sonoran Desert open space surrounding the Superstition Wilderness Area (SWA)…”. SALT’s challenge has always been that AZ State Trust land borders much of the southern boundary of the SWA\, and that region is in the path of development of Greater Phoenix. This presentation will review the active discussions and considerations of how best to protect (and fund) these important conservation lands. \nOur speaker is Charlie Goff\, current SALT President and retired biology professor at Indiana State University. He also chairs the Pinal Partnership Open Space and Trails Committee and serves on the Pinal County Open Space and Trails Department Advisory Commission. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\nApril 15\, 2021\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n4 – 5 p.m. MST\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\n\nVirtual\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nYes. He will discuss simple steps we can take to reverse declining biodiversity and explain why we\, are nature’s best hope.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 25\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00 PM – 2:00 PM MST\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n How do I join?\nPlease purchase your ticket through Eventbrite to participate.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Partners\nCAZCA functions through extensive partnerships to stand together and further our conservation efforts. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Other Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Summer Education Series \n \n Webinar \n \n \n \n \n AZ Water Policy Webinar\n \n Jun 10\, 2026 \n \n \n Join us for an insightful webinar on AZ water policy with Sarah Porter. All these species can respond different to urbanization. Some are exploiters\, others avoiders\, of these broad landscape changes. \nFew studies have evaluated the effects of urbanization on wildlife in the southwestern US\, especially in the highly arid Phoenix Valley\, which is home to the fifth largest city in the US. Join us as we explore how local wildlife has responded to our growing cities season by season\, and how we could potentially map their preferred habitats and activities! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DATE:\n\n\nJanuary 24\, 2020\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Time:\n\n\n3pm to 5pm\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location:\n\n\nDesert Botanical Garden \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Do I need to Register?\nYes!
